What a beautiful and different way to depict the City of Angels. We are used to see Los Angeles drenched in sunlight and brow-wiping heat, but gets a whimstical makeover from Neil Kryszak. As a music producer and photographer from New York now based in Los Angeles, Kryszak maintains a unique eye inspired by his own experiences when capturing his surroundings. The following images are part of his color-rich series entitled, Chromatic Experiments.

Kryszak exposed to The Plus that he has pulled much of his inspiration from cinematography, his father who is both a composer and painter as well as from his nostalgia for the urban feel of his past home in New York. Obvious from a visit to his Instagram, his works are often painted in saturated pinks, blues, reds, and purples. He captures an ornate aura of Los Angeles in his work, usually centered around its everyday landscape and cityscape. Another noteworthy aspect of Kryszak’s luminous photographs is his ability to bring out the glowing brilliance of the nighttime. While we often see the night as obscure and dim, Chromatic Experiments holds onto the mysteriousness of the night while bringing a more vibrant edge. A prime example of this is when the photographer captures what usually could be viewed as a fire escape of a dull apartment building and turns it into a glowing window portal seen beyond a dazzling staircase. THE WOMEN OF L.A.'S SCANDALOUS PAST AS DOCUMENTED BY MOSHE BRAKHA IN "LA BABE: THE REAL WOMEN OF LOS ANGELES 1975-1988" 

It was 1969 when Moshe Brakha and his camera first set foot in LA. For the next three decades, the Israeli-born photographer dedicated himself to capturing the city’s brash, hedonistic charm in all of its various forms. From movie stars to bartenders, musicians to groupies, Moshe gave himself to the entire spectrum of inhabitants. LA Babe: The Real Women of Los Angeles 1975-1988 – published by Rizzoli – sees a collection of the photographer’s previously unpublished works compiled together for the first time. The book is a riotous, multifaceted ode to the nebulous charisma of a city at its most wild and elegant, set against the punk scene of the era and the iconic women that helped prop it up. This hip collection of previously unpublished photographs includes the punk band the Runaways, Patricia Arquette, Lita Ford, candid photos of LaToya and Janet Jackson, and longtime Los Angeles staple Angelyne, among many others. From Beverly Hills High School cheerleaders to brash bartenders and groupies, L.A. BABE captures the essential Los Angeles at its sunniest, coolest, grittiest glam and punk peak. From Beverly Hills to Venice Beach to the Sunset Strip, L.A. BABE is an anthology of the photographer’s subjects from the 1970s and early 1980s.

Many of the images feature girls who Brakha calls “groupies.” The term isn’t a pejorative in his understanding. “I have great respect for the groupie. They have a part in the life of the music.” Brakha explains. “And the groupies weren’t just there for a single band – they were there for the music as a whole. They were friends with each other, friends of the bands. People think of groupies in a negative way, but it’s an important role. They are part of the story of the music.” Brakha’s photographs highlight the familial aspect of the punk scene and especially of the strong and mutually supportive community of women within it. Here is a culture that is completely their own, a world of freedom and radical self-expression outside of the strictures imposed by the status quo. The women in these images aren’t trying to fit into a readymade role, and though they never set out to be arbiters of an idea as possibly reductive as that of the L.A. Babe, they have influenced it with their trailblazing originality. We need our Pamelas and our Monroes, but our Kim Gordons and Exene Cervenkas are equally important, and by celebrating them Brakha helps to extend the concept of the L.A. Babe to be as broad and diverse as the city in which she lives.

Parker Day’s Film Photography is Freaky Sexy Weird and I Love it (NSFW)

Parker Day is a Los Angeles-based artist whose work explores identity and the masks we wear. Her focus is on fictionalized portraiture shot exclusively in studio on 35mm film. She completed ICONS, a series of 100 character portraits, which was presented in a solo show at Superchief Gallery LA in February 2017, coinciding with the release of her first monograph. 

When Bay Area photographer Parker Day moved in Los Angeles in 2015, she used social media to curate a community, using Instagram as her guide to an eclectic cast of local freaks. For ICONS, Day reached deep into her closet — er, costume room — for cheeky treasures and “weirdo stuff” collected during a years-long thrifting jag. Furbies and fishnet face masks exist alongside clip-on nails and bags of Wonder Bread... Deliberately un-Photoshopped, all of the irreverent perversity is served up to the viewer unvarnished. Setting your eyes on Parker Day’s work is a trip reminiscing of artists such as the French duo Pierre et Gilles or John Water. This child of the ’80s has pulled from her founding years’ techniques and a sense of oddity which was in dire need of revival.

“There’s real energy that’s communicated in how we look, in our gestures, in all of these little choices [...] I feel like I’ve lived many different lives… You can take control over how others see you and [that sets] you off into a new reality,” she explains. Follow Parker Day on Instagram.
